a little perseverance even in the face of tremendous adversity

A former Mr. Universe nicknamed “Pocket Hercules” has turned 100, showing he’s definitely not short on longevity. Manohar Aich, who stands 4 foot 11 inches tall, never let adversity stand in the way of achieving his goals. Aich overcame a vast number of hardships, including grinding poverty and a stint in prison, to achieve bodybuilding glory. He reflected on reaching the century mark and shared that happiness and a life without tensions are the key to his longevity.
His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered Sunday in the eastern city of Kolkata to celebrate his birthday the day before. Hindu priests chanted prayers while a feast was laid out to honor Aich, winner of the 1952 Mr. Universe title.
Flexing his muscles and flashing a toothless grin, Aich says his ability to take his troubles lightly and remain happy during difficult times are the secrets to his long life. That, and a simple diet of milk, fruits and vegetables along with rice, lentils and fish have kept him healthy. He does not smoke and has never touched alcohol. “I never allow any sort of tension to grip me. I had to struggle to earn money since my young days, but whatever the situation, I remained happy,” Aich said.
Aich, who was born in the small town of Comilla in Bengal, was a puny youngster. But he was attracted to exercising and building his muscles when as a schoolboy he saw a group of wrestlers in action. After leaving school in 1942, he joined the Royal air force under India’s British colonial rulers and it was there that he began his relentless pursuit of body building. Encouraged by a British officer named Reub Martin, who introduced him to weight training, Aich earned praise for his physique from his peers in the air force.
Some years later, however, he was thrown into prison when he protested against colonial oppression. “It was in the jail that I began weight training seriously. This helped me prepare myself for the world championship,” said Aich. “In jail I used to practice on my own, without any equipment, sometimes for 12 hours in a day,” he recalled. But the jail authorities were impressed with his perseverance and he was given a special diet to help build his stamina.
India’s independence in 1947 led to Aich’s release from jail. Dogged by poverty, Aich and his wife struggled to put their four children through school. There was little cash to indulge his passion for body building, but Aich took up odd jobs to earn a little on the side.
His 1950 win of a “Mr. Hercules” contest spurred him to set his sights on the Mr. Universe tournament in London. In 1951, Aich came second in the contest, and stayed on in London to prepare for another shot at the title. He returned to India after winning the title in 1952. What followed were a host of awards, including top positions in Asian Body building Championships.
Six decades later, Aich helps his sons run a gym and fitness center and spends his days guiding juvenile hopefuls to reach the heights of body building that he did. A minor stroke last year has robbed him of the ability to lift weights, but he keeps a watchful eye on young body builders training in his gym.
Although his two sons did not take up body building, Aich says his mentoring has earned him rewards. It has produced India’s eight-time national champion, Satya Paul and another protege, Premchand Dogra, snagged the Mr. Universe title in 1988.
I’d encourage you all to try to do some for form of resistance training twice per week, and walk like you are late for 40 minutes a day, four days a week. It doesn’t take much, just a little discipline and determination. Aich is great example of what we can accomplish with a little perseverance even in the face of tremendous adversity. He is living proof that following a brain and body healthy lifestyle can lead to a very long, happy and fulfilling life.

The most important and powerful tool we have

"The Law of Attraction, Power of Positive Thinking and Intention are all extremely powerful tools to help you attract and manifest your highest potential.
However, they are all secondary to intuition.
Unless you are walking on the path that your soul knows it must walk on
none of these tools will work properly for you.
If you're living a fear based life and believe that your dreams aren't real,
then the Law of Attraction will give you unrealized dreams,
the Power of Positive thinking and Intention will turn into hopeless wishing because you're taking action based on fear.
Once you cross over and say "Yes!" to what you soul knows it should be doing,
only then
will these tools be of any use to you!
We are not five sensory beings;
we have 6 senses,
intuition being the sixth and most important sense.
Once you learn to trust and take action only on your own guidance
the world will bow at your feet."

There's still time to stop the regrets.

IF I HAD MY LIFE TO LIVE OVER - by Erma Bombeck (Thanks to Mariella for sending this.  It's one of my favorites by the wise Erma Bombeck.
(written after she found out she was dying from cancer).---actually I read that she wrote it in 1979 and wasn't diagnosed until 1992. She died in 1996 (One of the worst years of my life.)   She did suffer from kidney problems all her life.

---
I would have gone to bed when I was sick instead of pretending the earth would go into a holding pattern if I weren't there for the day.

I would have burned the pink candle sculpted like a rose before it melted in storage.

I would have talked less and listened more.

I would have invited friends over to dinner even if the carpet was stained, or the sofa faded.

I would have eaten the popcorn in the 'good' living room and worried much less about the dirt when someone wanted to light a fire in the fireplace.

I would have taken the time to listen to my grandfather ramble about his youth.

I would have shared more of the responsibility carried by my husband.

I would never have insisted the car windows be rolled up on a summer day because my hair had just been teased and sprayed.

I would have sat on the lawn with my grass stains.

I would have cried and laughed less while watching television and more while watching life.

I would never have bought anything just because it was practical, wouldn't show soil, or was guaranteed to last a lifetime.

Instead of wishing away nine months of pregnancy, I'd have cherished every moment and realized that the wonderment growing inside me was the only chance in life to assist God in a miracle..

When my kids kissed me impetuously, I would never have said, 'Later... Now go get washed up for dinner.' There would have been more 'I love you's, more 'I'm sorry's.'
But mostly, given another shot at life, I would seize every minute; look at it and really see it; live it and never give it back. STOP SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF!

Don't worry about who doesn't like you, who has more, or who's doing what
Instead, let's cherish the relationships we have with those who do love us..

“When God Created Mothers"

“When God Created Mothers"  by Erma Bombeck
When the Good Lord was creating mothers, He was into His sixth day of "overtime" when the angel appeared and said. "You're doing a lot of fiddling around on this one."

And God said, "Have you read the specs on this order?" She has to be completely washable, but not plastic. Have 180 moveable parts...all replaceable. Run on black coffee and leftovers. Have a lap that disappears when she stands up. A kiss that can cure anything from a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. And six pairs of hands."

The angel shook her head slowly and said. "Six pairs of hands.... no way."

It's not the hands that are causing me problems," God remarked, "it's the three pairs of eyes that mothers have to have."

That's on the standard model?" asked the angel. God nodded.

One pair that sees through closed doors when she asks, 'What are you kids doing in there?' when she already knows. Another here in the back of her head that sees what she shouldn't but what she has to know, and of course the ones here in front that can look at a child when he goofs up and say. 'I understand and I love you' without so much as uttering a word."

God," said the angel touching his sleeve gently, "Get some rest tomorrow...."

I can't," said God, "I'm so close to creating something so close to myself. Already I have one who heals herself when she is sick...can feed a family of six on one pound of hamburger...and can get a nine year old to stand under a shower."

The angel circled the model of a mother very slowly. "It's too soft," she sighed.

But tough!" said God excitedly. "You can imagine what this mother can do or endure."

Can it think?"

Not only can it think, but it can reason and compromise," said the Creator.

Finally, the angel bent over and ran her finger across the cheek.

There's a leak," she pronounced. "I told You that You were trying to put too much into this model."

It's not a leak," said the Lord, "It's a tear."

What's it for?"

It's for joy, sadness, disappointment, pain, loneliness, and pride."

You are a genius, " said the angel.

Somberly, God said, "I didn't put it there.”

"EPIGENETICS"---THIS IS THE MOST EXCITING ARTICLE I HAVE EVER READ SO I'M POSTING THE WHOLE THING FOR THOSE I LOVE.

Epigenetics is the study of molecular mechanisms by which the environment controls gene activity. It is a new scientific field and it shows that DNA blueprints passed down through genes are not set in stone at birth. Each of us inherits our own unique variation of the genetic code. We can’t change the hardwiring of our genetic code, but epigenetic factors such as lifestyle and diet can radically change what our genes do.
What’s the significance of this?

It means that you have a lot more control over your health than you think.
We have always assumed that age-related diseases like high blood pressure, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, stroke and cancer are inevitable consequences of aging or because of our genes. But we now know through our understanding of epigenetics that this is not true. It is not about your genes but how you communicate with your genes through your diet, lifestyle & the environment you bathe your genes in. In other words, you can change how your genes are expressed. Several studies have shown that changing lifestyle causes changes in gene expression. Stress, diet, behavior, toxins and other factors activate chemical switches that turn genes on and off and regulate gene expression.

What do you mean you can change how your Genes are Expressed?
There are thousands of genes that render you susceptible to the many chronic diseases so many people are experiencing today, such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes and cancer. But whether or not these genes are expressed as diseases is determined by how you live your life…your diet, how many toxins you are exposed to, what supplements you take, your beliefs and how you handle stress. That means you may be susceptible to heart disease or diabetes, but you do not necessarily have to succumb to them. That is, your genes are a predisposition, not a fate. This is extremely empowering because you are in control.

For the most part you do not manifest disease merely by a defective gene, but by the regulation or expression of your genes, and the expression of your genes is much more dynamic and modifiable than had previously been realized.
I always thought there was nothing you can do about your Genes. Is this true?
We have all been taught that we are stuck with our genes. But this is a huge myth… most genes are not set in stone or fixed, but rather modifiable.
We are born with a set of genes, which are inherited, which we can’t change, like body frame or the color of your eyes or hair.

There are also certain genes that if you are born with, you will be crippled, retarded or have some serious childhood disease and die early. But these genes that can’t be changed are less than 2%. Most of our genes are actually modifiable and can be turned on or off. In fact, you ARE changing your genetics daily and perhaps even hourly from the foods you eat, the air you breathe, and even by the thoughts you think.

What do you mean you can turn Genes On and Off?

Bathing your genes in the right environment (good nutrients, food, love and thoughts), will turn the genes for health on and the “disease” genes off.
You can “turn on” genes that prevent chronic diseases and “turn off” oncogenes that promote breast cancer and prostate cancer as well as turn off genes that cause inflammation and oxidative stress. Your genes are controlled by epigenetic coding that tells them to be expressed or not expressed — which is completely controlled by your environment and lifestyle.

Are these Epigenetic changes passed on to future generations like the Genetic Code?
YES, it’s called epigenetic inheritance!! For many years we were secure in our beliefs that, no matter what we did to damage ourselves in terms of poor lifestyle choices, it only affected us. Our children would be born with a genetic clean slate. But now we are learning that this is not true, and epigenetic changes can be passed down for many generations. So, the lifestyle choices you make today affect not only you but also your children and grandchildren. In other words, each of us has far greater responsibility than we ever imagined!

You will succeed where all others fail...

"When you want to do a big thing,
 get the mental pattern,
 make it perfect,
know just what it means,
enlarge your thought,
keep it to yourself,
pass it over to the creative power behind all things,
 wait
and listen,
and when the impression comes,
follow it with assurance.
Don't talk to anyone about it.
Never listen to negative talk or pay attention to it
and you will succeed where all others fail."

- Ernest Holmes, was the founder of Religious Science. This passage is from his book "Creative Mind & Success".

I AM THE MIRACLE

"I prayed for change,
so I changed my mind.
I prayed for guidance

 and learned to trust myself.
I prayed for happiness

and realized I am not my ego.
I prayed for peace

and learned to accept others unconditionally.
I prayed for abundance

and realized my doubt kept it out.
I prayed for wealth

and realized it is my health.
I prayed for a miracle

and realized I am the miracle.
I prayed for a soul mate

and realized I am the One.
I prayed for love and

realized it's always knocking,
but I have to let it in."

- Jackson Kiddard, author & polymath.

Easier said than done...but POSSIBLE!

"The golden opportunity you are seeking
is in yourself.
It is not in your environment,
it is not in luck or chance,
or the help of others;
it is in yourself alone."
